“Two Mississauga music acts will appear on next week’s Canada’s Got Talent TV show as they strive to show the entire country what they’ve got.
Singer/musician James Alcock, 52, who’s been singing professionally for about seven years, and rock choir Voices Rock Prime, based out of Applewood United Church in Mississauga, will go up against a dozen other contestants when the show airs on April 11 in prime time.
The Dreamboats, the third Mississauga group competing in this season’s version of the hit TV show, will appear at a later date. They’re an award-winning ’50s and ’60s tunes band that for the last year-plus has taken up residence in Southern California.
The three Mississauga entries are competing against dozens of others for the grand prize of $150,000 awarded by the on-air talent competition.
According to Toronto Moon, which for the past two decades has written exclusively about the GTA live music scene, Alcock first came to most people’s attention several years ago as a singer for AC/DC tribute bands Bare Rump and Powerage.
Voices Rock Prime, meanwhile, is described as “a musical experience that appeals to senior singers and retirees in the GTA.”
The vocal group says online that, “Voices Rock Prime embraces inclusivity, community, immense fun and excellence in music. Our repertoire includes rock and pop from the ’50s/’60s and up.”
The three Mississauga acts are among 82 entries from coast to coast looking to capture the crown in the latest installment of the hit TV show, which began airing March 21 at 8 p.m. on Citytv.
Other Ontario acts that will appear on next week’s show are Cydnee Abbott (Oakville, dance), Maya Gamzu (Toronto, singer), Katherine Lynn-Rose (Burlington, singer), The Sigmaz (Scarborough, dance), Kevin Fast (Cobourg, stunt) and Darcy Mitchison (Hamilton, singer).
The season will conclude with a live, two-hour finale on May 16 at 8 p.m. at the new OLG Stage at Fallsview Casino in Niagara Falls.
The champion will win $150,000 and the opportunity to work with a financial advisor to help realize their financial dreams, producers of the show say.
They’ll also get a chance to compete south of the border in the America’s Got Talent Presents: Superstars Live stage show in Las Vegas.
The show reached more than 7.6 million Canadians last year.
