Jay works throughout Turtle Island creating and producing installations for many kinds of situations such as sets or costumes for live performance (Pacific National Exhibition, City of Stratford, Caravan Farm Theatre), works like murals (City of Vancouver, McMaster Children’s Hospital, Iroquois Museum) as well as objects for display in galleries and public spaces (New York State Museum, Waterfront Toronto, Woodland Cultural Centre, The Reach Gallery). He enjoys working in teams and has facilitated workshops ranging from 5 to 500 participants.

Havens’ practice embraces re-learning the ways of their Onkwehon:we ancestors and un-learning ways which go against natural cycles as a lifelong adventure and continuous challenge. Their research has focused on Indigenous Methods of Knowledge-building and Wholistic Ways of Being’ applied to creative and logistical processes of contemporary art making. Jay holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Performance Design + Production from the University of British Columbia (2008) and a Master of Fine Art from Emily Carr University of Art + Design (2016). They continue their learning outside of institutions each day through relationships to people, places, land and waters. Currently Jay and his husband share their time between unceded Coast Salish Territories on Vancouver Island as well as Haudenosaunee Territories in modern-day Ontario and New York State. Havens is a member of The Associated Designers of Canada.
